This fine looking lantern clock is unfortunately not what it appears, it probably made c1900 but is a reproduction but still an Antique.
It has a double fusee movement & it would have had x 2 bells mounted on the rear door, but these have long been removed? the clock is running & needs a service & a pendulum suspension spring.
The customer does not want us to fit new bells as she remembers her grandfather removing them as the clock is a quarter striking clock & would keep them awake at night, the clock was sent to South Africa to another family member when her grandfather past on & now has been brought back to the uk & is now going to get the attention it needs, although a reproduction still a very nice clock & well worth preserving.
The original Lantern clocks date back to the 17th century & predate Grandfather clocks, they are often weight driven & pendulum regulated & had a 30 hour duration movement, as time went on & these clocks went faulty clockmakers would often replace the movements for a more modern movement so its not unusual to see lantern clocks dating back to the 17th century with a movement much much younger, this will obviously de value the clock but never the less still very worth while clocks to have in anyone’s collection.
