We will set up your Grandfather Clock professionally this will include positioning your clock in its new home making sure its in beat with that real & reassuring tick tock that only an Antique clock has, quartz clocks simply don’t have this & often are described as having no presence or soul.
Antique grandfather clocks are often a true work of art often hand made, the dials are hand painted many parts of the movement where meticulously made by hand or using machinery that would have been hand or foot driven & then add the fact there only lighting would have been day light or candle light, then we move on to the clock case another outstanding piece of carpentry made of solid wood often oak & then veneered in a more exotic wood such as walnut, these levels of craftmanship have almost disappeared now there is simply no substitute for a traditional grandfather clock or any antique timepiece, modern clocks simply can not compare in any way, they are made entirely by machine the wood is often MDF or some kind of ply then this has what i can describe as a plastic laminate they will not be around for 200 years + Grandfather clocks of days gone by where made by true craftsmen not made to a price point they where made with quality in mind & the customer would have been involved in the look of the clock this is why they are all often very different from each other as the clockmaker & cabinet maker would have been commissioned to undertake the making of a Grandfather clock often the clockmaker would have had members of his family who where carpenters etc they would have worked on the case . most Grandfather clocks are oak as this is the wood that is indigenous to the country, mahogany & other woods would have been shipped in from other parts of the world so this is why mahogany cased clocks are more expensive & often more valuable, i could go on for hours about the makers of grandfather clocks & the things i have seen but i would need a whole web site just for this & i certainly don’t know it all , Ill just finish by saying i was lucky enough sometime ago to speak to a very well respected old time clockmaker & he said he could write a book on the things he new & the history of grandfather clocks & could fill a library with the things he does not know you would need 3 lifetimes he said. There is probable just a few books on the company’s who make modern clocks & that’s it.
All our clocks are Antique & are hand picked based on there cosmetic condition & mechanical integrity, if the clock is not in the best possible condition it wont be part of our collection.
